Jacob Kriemer's Scrub Founding College EssayI was upset when I was not named a captain by the cross country coach, but I wasn’t about to let his decision get in the way of my vision of a better team. T-shirt designs, psyche party themes, a new mascot –I had it all planned out. Instead of getting upset about not being chosen as captain, I decided I would make my own title that poked fun at the fact that I’m a terrible runner but affirmed my love for the sport. Thus, the first of three TriScrubs was born. Two friends and I agreed that despite being seniors without an official title, we did not want to be just some other runners on the team. As an upperclassman, I wanted to do something different to close out my cross country career. Our role is an important one: we see to it that all runners, fast and slow, experience the camaraderie we ourselves wish to feel. Three years of running did not result in any first-place finishes or medals. Regardless, I managed to have a phenomenal experience with this year’s team. At first, my friends were skeptical when I suggested the idea of the TriScrubs. I have a knack for politics, so it seemed pretty natural to make a declaration of how I saw our position on the team: OFFICAL GOVERNING DOCUMENT OF THE MOORESTOWN CROSS COUNTRY TRISCRUBSWe, the TriScrubs of Moorestown High School, submit that we are substandard in the area of running. We believe that it should not hinder our ability to be an important part of the MXC team and experience. Therefore, we offer the following to help define our mindset and outlook. A TriScrub observes the following Characteristics of Scrubbiness at all times:
Sure enough, they agreed. We do not place in races, we host rap battles, and we make fun of ourselves. Better yet, we do it with pride. The TriScrubs are looked up to as the funny, well-meaning guys on the team who did not stomp off angrily when they were not chosen as captains their senior year. It is this sense of loyalty that I hold as one of the most important attributes of the TriScrubs. Guys on the team have started calling themselves ‘Scrubbies’ after the tradition we have created: Not everyone can be a champion, but work hard anyway. It is this tradition that I am proud of. Am I saying that it is okay to just laugh off mediocre performance? No, but there are some things a person just cannot change. Sometimes though, you have to make your own destiny. |
